MD/PhD Dual Degree

In conjunction with the Long School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences offers an MD/PhD degree through the NIH-designated South Texas Medical Scientist Training Program (STX-MSTP). MSTP students may pursue their PhD in the Biology of Aging discipline of the Integrated Biomedical Sciences PhD

Who should consider the STX-MSTP?

The STX-MSTP seeks applicants who are committed to becoming physician-scientists and who wish to conduct rigorous, hypothesis-driven laboratory or population-based research into some of the most vexing biomedical problems we face, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, aging, infectious diseases, obesity and diabetes, neurological/psychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, osteoporosis and other musculoskeletal disorders, diseases of the immune system, and others.

Applicants for our program should have a passion for biomedical investigation and the desire to translate those biomedical discoveries into medical advances.

About the Program

The dual degree program is a seven to nine-year program in which students complete two years of medical school and then embark full-time on their PhD dissertation research for an average of four years. After a successful dissertation defense, students return to the Long School of Medicine for their final two years of medical school.

With guidance from program leaderships, students will select their laboratory rotations, graduate discipline, and eventually, their supervising professors from an outstanding array of distinguished members of the graduate faculty derived from both the Medical and Graduate Schools.

Financial support includes a stipend of $30,000/year throughout enrollment, plus the yearly cost of tuition, fees, and fringe benefits.
