"Because Claude Monet (1840-1926), the French impressionist, painted the same landscape scenes over and over, one can perceive changes in his vision as he aged. After developing cataracts in his 70s, his paintings lost detail and had fewer violets, blues, and greens, as the colors we could see diminished. He underwent cataract surgery at the age of 83, but never fully regained his color vision."
