Suzette D. Tardif, Ph.D.
The Tardif laboratory’s activities center on the development of the marmoset monkey as a disease model. Marmosets are small South American primates. The group’s research approach is highly integrative, seeking both mechanistic and evolutionary explanations to understand the biology of this unusual group of nonhuman primates. They strive to develop the marmoset as a premiere primate model of aging. Because of their small size and associated shorter lifespan, marmosets have great potential as a species in which to better understand primate aging in a controlled environment. The Tardif laboratory is developing a barrier-maintained marmoset breeding colony that will be available for aging research. While this colony is being developed, they are working through the marmoset resources that they developed while at the Southwest National Primate Research Center – these studies include characterizing both normal and abnormal aging in this species. The group has concentrated their efforts around those phenotypes that differentiate healthy from frail aged individuals, such as body composition, muscle strength, and cognitive function. Finally, the Tardif laboratory works in close collaboration with the laboratories of Drs. Hornsby and Li to develop the marmoset as a model of regenerative medicine.
